THE FIRST BAND SAW BOX I SAW WAS AT THE WOODCRAFT STORE WHERE I WAS WORKING, in 1998. A FELLOW WAS
GIVING A CLASS ON MAKING THE NESTED OVAL BOXES. I WAS SO EXCITED I WENT RIGHT HOME AND STARTED TO MAKE
THESE COOL BOXES. THE CLASS INSTRUCTOR INTRODUCED ME TO THE ORIGINAL BOOK BY TOM CRABB, (1984), ON BAND
SAW BOXES. CRABB'S BOOK HAD A WEALTH OF INTERESTING PLANS AND DIFFERENT CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES; AND
I WAS HOOKED ON MAKING THESE BOXES. HIS BOOK IS OUT OF PRINT, BUT YOU CAN STILL FIND IT ONLINE.
THEN, IN 2000, LOIS KEENER VENTURA CAME OUT WITH A NEW BOOK ON THE SUBJECT. VENTURA'S BOOK IS WELL
PRODUCED AND GIVES THE READER GOOD INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO MAKE DRAWERED BOXES. VENTURA'S BOOK IS
AVAILABLE AT WOODCRAFT AND OTHER VENDORS OF WOODWORKING BOOKS.
I DECIDED TO MAKE A BOOK THAT COMBINED THE VARIETY AND FUN OF CRABB'S BOOK WITH THE PRODUCTION
VALUES OF VENTURA'S BOOK IN A BUNCH OF NEW BOXES DESIGNS.
HISTORY
PRODUCTION
ONE OF THE HAPPIEST MOMENTS OF MY LIFE WASWHEN I GOT A CONTRACT IN JULY 2004 WITH STERLING PUBLISHING
CO., INC. TO PRODUCE THE MANUSCRIPT BY JULY 2005. I SPENT THE GREATER PART OF ONE YEAR WORKING ON IT. 1,100
HOURS, 68,000 WORDS, 600 PHOTOS, AND 120 ILLUSTRATIONS. IN JANUARY 2006 THE EDITING PROCESS BEGAN. FOR THE
NEXTSEVEN MONTHS WE WORKED OUT THE FINAL DETAILS OF WHICH PROJECTS TO INCLUDE AND WE WORKED ON
MAKING EVERYTHING AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE. IN THE PROCESS WE HAD TO ELIMINATE EIGHT OF THE PROJECTS, OR THE
BOOK WOULD HAVE HAD TO BE TOO BIG, AND TOO EXPENSIVE. IT WAS HARD TO DO, BUT I ULTIMATELY MADE THE
DECISIONS FOR WHICH PROJECTS TO CUT.

THE BOOK HAS 22 DIFFERENT PROJECTS SHOWING 6 DIFFERENT CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES, WITH HUNDREDS
OF STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS AND PHOTOS. I'VE INCLUDED INSTRUCTION ABOUT INDIVIDUALIZING YOUR BOXES  
WITH CARVING, WOOD BURNING, INLAY, ONLAY, DYES, AND STAINS. THERE IS A LARGE SECTION ON SAFETY, PROPER
TOOL USE, AND FINISHES.

The 8-Cut-Projects were cut from the book when we saw that it was getting too
big. They are in full color with plans in full size or to be enlarged by 200%. They range

The book costs $17.95, has 224 pages, and 22 projects. All of the techniques of construction I could think of
are in the book, as well as general information about using the tools, designing your own boxes, finishing, and
